BizRecycling helps Pavilion on Berry recycle better

Pavilion on Berry is an apartment community offering comfortable, off-campus housing for University of Minnesota students and surrounding colleges. In 2019, Pavilion on Berry management staff had significant issues with finding non-recyclable materials in the recycling.

“Trash would build up on the ground and our recycling was filled with items that didn’t belong,” said Danielle Schoen, assistant property manager.

For help improving their recycling, The Pavilion on Berry staff turned to BizRecycling. After a free assessment from recycling experts, management staff applied for and received a BizRecycling grant to fund recycling and trash enclosure improvements, indoor and outdoor recycling and trash stations, and even security cameras to monitor recycling dumpsters. BizRecycling also provided Pavilion on Berry with a recycling tote for each unit to cut down on the use of plastic bags.

As a result, The Pavilion on Berry has seen a drastic decrease in contamination. The enclosure improvements created more room for recycling, the recycling stations made recycling convenient, and the security cameras allowed the managers to address contamination with targeted education.

“We don’t see trash in our recycling anymore and we no longer have trash overflowing on the ground,” said Schoen.

After working with BizRecyling, building management no longer receives complaints about trash areas, which shows how well the improved system is working. Furthermore, Pavilion on Berry has been able to increase the total amount of recycling it collects in a year by 7,280 pounds!
