Legal Considerations

It is illegal to place fluorescent, high intensity discharge (HID) and other non-incandescent lights in the trash because they contain mercury.

Disposal

The following light bulbs are safe to put in the trash:

• Incandescent bulbs
• Halogen bulbs

Hazardous Waste

The light bulbs below are hazardous and should not be placed in the trash. Bring these bulbs to the household hazardous waste collection sites for free.​

• Fluorescent bulbs (all shapes, including compact fluorescent)
• High intensity discharge (HID) bulbs
• LED bulbs
• Neon bulbs
