Legal Considerations

State law requires appliances to be processed to remove hazardous components prior to recycling the scrap metal.

Disposal

Proper disposal depends on the type of heater (electric, oil-filled or propane).

Oil-filled space heaters should be drained first. Bring oil to the household hazardous waste collection sites for free.

Propane tanks should be also be brought to the household hazardous waste collection sites.

Bring drained space heaters to one of the disposal companies listed below. Call to verify items accepted, hours and fees.

Electric space heaters can be brought to Tech Dump (see address below).
