Ted Schoenecker selected as Public Works Director

Ted SchoeneckerTed Schoenecker has been selected as the Director of Ramsey County's Public Works department, pending appointment as Ramsey County Engineer by the board of commissioners. The department is responsible for a 293-mile system of county roads including construction, repairs, maintenance and snow removal. The Surveyor's Office and Stormwater Management division are also housed within the Public Works department.

"We're thrilled to welcome Ted as the new leader of Ramsey County Public Works," said Deputy County Manager Johanna Berg. "Ted’s impressive background and experience in transportation at multiple levels of government – as well as in the private sector – makes him a great fit for us as the need for strong partnerships grows right along with our list of projects."

Schoenecker has held engineering and planning positions at the city, county and state level since 2002. Most recently, he has been Deputy State Aid Engineer at MnDOT since 2014 and District State Engineer for two years prior to that. From 2005 to 2012, Schoenecker served as transportation planning manager and traffic engineer at Washington County, Minn. He received his professional engineering license in 2002, the year he began his career in the public sector as an Assistant Traffic Engineer in Bloomington, Minn. From 1998 to 2001, Schoenecker worked in engineering roles at H.R. Green Company and URS Corporation.

"It is an exciting time to join Ramsey County’s Public Works department," said Schoenecker, "I’m looking forward to working with the top-notch staff as we continue building an All Abilities Transportation Network, tackle complex construction projects and increase the scope of our maintenance program."

Schoenecker received his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Minnesota. He is a member of the American Public Works Association, as well as the Institute of Transportation Engineers and Minnesota Surveyors and Engineers Society – in both of which he has also held leadership positions.

Schoenecker will report to Johanna Berg, Deputy County Manager - Economic Growth and Community Investment, beginning January 8. The Ramsey County Board of Commissioners is expected to vote on the County Engineer appointment in January. Schoenecker will succeed current Ramsey County Engineer Jim Tolaas, who will retire early in 2018 after having served Ramsey County’s Public Works department in various roles for 43 years.
