Walk honoring sexual violence survivors is April 28
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, also known as the CDC, reports 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men experience sexual violence during their lifetimes. April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
Each April, Saint Paul - Ramsey County Public Health's SOS Sexual Violence Services sponsors an annual walk to honor survivors of sexual assault. The 2018 walk will take place Sunday, April 28 at Hamline University. Pre-registration is required. The first 100 people registered receive a free t-shirt.
Crisis and support services available
Public Health's SOS Sexual Violence Services provides free, confidential, 24-hour crisis services for victims of sexual violence, their friends and family. SOS offers a range of services including:
- Support and information when reporting assault or seeking medical care.
- Medical advocacy during exams or while receiving medical care.
- Legal advocacy on filing a police report or other legal issues.
- Safety planning involving shelter.
- Open support group meetings.
SOS support groups provide a safe environment for participants to speak about sexual violence, share ways in which they can support a survivor and help participants cope with how sexual violence has also impacted their own lives.
In 2016, Ramsey County became a Start by Believing community committed to helping change how it responds to survivors of sexual violence and to expanding support resources.
