Regional Studies & Projects
Ramsey County participates in regional transportation planning and implementation through collaboration with local, regional and state organizations and the Transportation Advisory Board.
Southwest Corridor - The Southwest Light Rail Transit (LRT) project (METRO Green Line Extension) will connect the communities of St. Louis Park, Hopkins, Minnetonka, and Eden Prairie, passing in close proximity to Edina, to an integrated system of transitways, including connections to the METRO Blue Line, the Northstar Commuter Rail line, bus routes and proposed future transitways.
Bottineau Corridor - The METRO Blue Line Extension (LRT) proposed alignment is primarily at-grade and will have up to 11 new stations in addition to Target Field Station and about 13 miles of double track. The line will interline with the METRO Blue Line and connect Minneapolis and the region’s northwestern communities with existing LRT on the METRO Green Line, future LRT on the METRO Green Line Extension, bus rapid transit on the METRO Red Line, the Northstar commuter rail line and local and express bus routes.
I-35W Managed Corridor - The I-35 managed corridor study identified preferred managed lane concepts as well as improvement strategies at locations along the I-35W north corridor. The next steps include an environmental assessment.
Completed regional projects
Northstar Commuter Rail - The Northstar runs along Highways 10 and 47 from downtown Minneapolis to Big Lake. Commuter rail runs along the existing Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad tracks.
Cedar Avenue Bus Rapid Transit - As a main connection between southern suburbs and both downtown Minneapolis and St. Paul, Cedar Avenue is one of the most traveled roads in Dakota County. In 2012, bus rapid transit, which has the speed and reliability of light rail, was launched in this corridor.
