Young people who have little or no juvenile history and have committed a qualifying offense are eligible for diversion. Diversion helps young people who have been cited or arrested for an offense to avoid a charge and a juvenile court record.
Instead of going to court, the young person and parent/guardian attend a diversion intake meeting, complete an assessment and sign a diversion contract. If the young person successfully follows the conditions of the contract, there will be no charge and no juvenile court record. If the young person chooses not to participate or does not follow the diversion contract, the case may be charged in juvenile court.
