The Law Enforcement Career Exploring Program is designed for youth (male and female) ages 14 through 20 years old who have an interest in learning more about careers in public safety. The program goal is to encourage youth to become responsible citizens of the community and nation.

Information night

The "Annual Explorer First Nighter" is held during the month of September each year. The 2017 meeting will be held on Thursday, September 28, 2017, starting at 6:00pm. This informational meeting for students and their parents will be held at the Sheriff's Water Patrol office at 5 South Owasso Boulevard in Little Canada. About the program

The Explorers Program provides youth with education, training, and first-hand career experience as well as leadership and community service opportunities. Upon entrance into the program, new explorers are required to attend an Explorer’s Academy.Fifteen students on average attend the Explorer Academy each year.

Explorers participate in a number of activities, including classroom and practical training on a number of law enforcement scenarios. Scenarios include bomb threats, burglary in progress, crime prevention. Explorers also help the Sheriff’s Office with community events; assist with certain activities, such as alcohol and tobacco compliance checks; and partner with the Water Patrol Unit using boats and ATVs to help patrol the county’s lakes, parks, and trails.

The Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office, in affiliation with the Boy Scouts of America, sponsors Explorer Post #2. Explorer Post #2 was established in 1957 and is the oldest post in Minnesota. Explorer Post #2 is a national Law Enforcement Exploring Post that competes annually at the Law Enforcement Exploring Competition. (Explorer Information Sheet


The Law Enforcement Career Exploring Program is available to youth between the ages of 14 and 21 who pass a criminal background check. The number of participants is limited.
