Add a News & Updates item
This guide will show you how to add a News / Update article to the website.
After the article is created, it can be added to a newsfeed on either the homepage or a department newsfeed. Contact the Communications Helpdesk if you would like your article to run on the front page of the site.
Steps
- Hover over the small 'Content' menu (top menu), hover over 'add content', click on 'News / Update'.
- Complete the following fields under the 'General' tab:
- Long Headline - Enter the title of the article.
- Short Headline - If there is a shortened version of the headline, enter that here. This can also just be a repeat of the headline.
- Link Title - leave as 'Yes'.
- Date - The day / time that this will post. This field does not schedule the article to post, it is just the date and time stamp that is posted at the bottom of all articles.
- Expiration date - If this article is placed on a newsfeed, choose the date and time that you would like the article to be taken off a newsfeed.
(e.g. Your article is to advertise an event that runs 9 a.m. - 11 a.m., so you choose 11 a.m. that day as the expiration date and time). - Excerpt - This is the text that will appear on a newsfeed. This shouldn't be longer than one (maybe two) sentence(s). Do not link any text in the excerpt, even if the same text is linked in the article. Example:
- Article - Enter the text of the article. Article content tips and reminders:
- Shorter articles have better engagement.
- When possible, link over to pages on the site that contain relevant information, and limit the amount of duplicated information between the article and the pages.
- Use a button as a call to action, e.g. "Learn more" or "Read the news release".
- Complete the tags in the 'Tags' tab:
- Content Type Facet - leave as 'News'.
- Category - Choose the appropriate category. You can select more than one.
- Department affiliation - Choose the appropriate department(s).
- Upload any images in the 'Media' tab:
- Image - Sized 468 x 336, or close to those parameters, web-resolution.
- Image thumbnail - Sized 300 x 300, web-resolution.
- All other menu selections can remain the default. Click 'Save' in the lower left corner of the menu.
To edit the news item, click on the 'Edit' button on the secondary toolbar:
After the article has been reviewed and approved, publish the article by clicking the 'Publish' button:
