Bringing Native culture, connection and opportunity to Ramsey County Corrections

Anthony Drews, Nashke Games

As part of its mission to create safe and healthy communities through personal change and accountability, the Ramsey County Community Corrections recently hosted a powerful cultural experience for Native residents.

Melissa Perez, health program assistant, invited Anthony Drews, Founder and President of Nashke Games, to spend the day with Native residents at the Ramsey County Correctional Facility. Through storytelling, shared history, and culturally grounded games, Anthony brought not only his time and knowledge but also laughter, joy, and a renewed sense of Native pride.

Joining in support of the event was Nicole Beane, American Indian community coordinator for Ramsey County. Her presence reinforced the county’s commitment to uplifting and affirming Indigenous identity within its correctional programming.

Nashke Games specializes in educational games that center Indigenous language and culture. During the visit, Drews introduced games rooted in traditional teachings, using them as a catalyst to spark conversation, healing, and cultural connection among the Native population.

In addition to sharing the games, Drews also introduced opportunities from the Tiwahe Foundation, where he serves as the program manager for the American Indian Family Empowerment Program (AIFEP). This community-based grant program invests directly in Native individuals who are working to make positive changes in their lives, whether through education, cultural revitalization, healing or leadership development. The program emphasizes that individual growth creates ripple effects that strengthen families and communities alike.

This visit cultivated an atmosphere of inclusion, empowerment, and hope, reminding participants that their stories, their voices, and their future paths still matter. Through cultural restoration and meaningful community partnerships, Corrections continues its commitment to supporting the whole person and fostering long-term, positive change.
