Ramsey County and Model Cities to host Town Hall for Safe Space Shelter relocation

Event location has been changed to Luther Seminary's Olson Campus Center located at 1490 Fulham Street in Saint Paul. The change follows efforts to accommodate a large community presence. Guests will need to enter the building through the east entrance. The west entrance is currently closed for construction. 

Ramsey County, together with nonprofit Model Cities, will host a community town hall May 21 to announce the relocation of Safe Space Shelter to Luther Seminary in Saint Paul this summer. The event will be held at Luther Seminary's Olson Campus Center from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. Residents are encouraged to attend to ask questions and share comments with county and city officials as well as Model Cities staff who currently operates the shelter.

Why is the move happening?

The anticipated move of Safe Space Shelter is a part of a phased approach to close Ramsey County's Government Center East, which is set to conclude by the end of 2024.

When will the official move to new location happen?

The official move of Safe Space Shelter to Luther Seminary will happen Summer 2024. A date has not been finalized yet as there are several organizational and structural activities that need to take place prior to the shelter occupying the space. Ramsey County and Model Cities will continue to engage the surrounding community and neighbors as plans for the new site progress, including announcing the official date of move-in to the public.

Will the new space offer the same amenities/same number of beds?

Yes. Luther Seminary will offer the same amenities as the former Safe Space Shelter location. 64 overnight beds with showers and day-time lockers for personal items.

Will the new location be permanent or possibility of it being a temporary location?

It is expected that Safe Space Shelter will occupy the new location at Luther Seminary for the next three years.

How is this shelter being funded or paid for?

Safe Space Shelter is funded through Ramsey County, the state and other philanthropic and in-kind support.

Safe Space shelter reservations are being made by Ramsey County's Shelter Entry and Diversion team. People in need of emergency shelter, as well as community partners, are encouraged to contact the team for assistance using one of the following methods:
