Make the most of the Minnesotan winter

Minnesota winters are known to be cold, dark and long. However, there is a lot to love about the season as well. Find appreciation for where you live even after shoveling your way out of a snowbank.

Get outside.

There are walking paths, trails and outdoor spaces all over the county. Don’t let the cold keep you in-- bundle up and head outside!

You can buy a ski pass from Ramsey County Parks & Recreation to access groomed trails. They also offer skating programs, winter recreation samplers and youth and family cross-country ski lessons. Snowshoeing, fat tire bike riding and sledding are other fun activities.

Looking for a slower pace? Access a trail or paved walking path near you, or warm up with a backyard outdoor fire.

Pick up a new hobby.

Winter can be a great time try something new! If you’re interested in outdoor recreation, you can rent equipment at recreation centers. This allows you to try something before buying the (often expensive) equipment. Rent items like skis, snowshoes, camping supplies and more.

You can also check with your local community education program to see what classes they offer during the winter months.

Be a tourist at home.

Explore where you live—you may surprise yourself with what you find! A good place to start is with your local historical society. For example, The Saint Paul Historical Society offers self-guided walks around several Saint Paul neighborhoods, pointing out historical landmarks, still standing or not.

Other ideas include trying out a restaurant you haven’t been to before, attending a community event or simply exploring a part of your city that you haven’t spent much time in.

Make community.

Spending too much time at home? Consider volunteering some of your time to a community group. Not only can you help make a positive impact, but you can also connect with other people. See Ramsey County volunteer opportunities for ideas.
