Renew your Medical Assistance
Get ready to renew
During the COVID-19 pandemic people did not have to renew their Medical Assistance (MA) or MinnesotaCare. Now that the pandemic has ended, most people will be required to renew their health insurance regularly.
Renewals take place on the anniversary month of the enrollee’s original application for coverage. Those who need to renew will receive their renewal packet 60 days before it is due.

Learn if you qualify for an automatic renewal
Federal Medicaid regulations require that states attempt to automatically renew medical assistance for those who are currently enrolled with open case files that have verifiable income from an electronic source before sending a paper renewal form and requesting information from the enrollee.
This simplified renewal process is known as the “ex parte” or “auto renewal” process.
- The Minnesota Eligibility Technology System (METS) will manually auto renew behind the scenes and determine whether Medical Assistance for families with children and single adults can be completed or if a renewal form needs to be submitted to redetermine eligibility.
- County financial workers will attempt to renew Medical Assistance for people who are age 65 or older, with blindness or who have a disability and meet certain autorenewal criteria.
You may be eligible for an autorenewal if you meet any of the criteria below.
Financial workers can verify your income electronically by:
- Social Security income.
- Retirement, Survivors, and Disability Insurance.
- Railroad Retirement Benefits.
You are currently enrolled in one of these programs:
- Medical Assistance enrollees on Minnesota Family Investment Program (MFIP).
- Medical Assistance enrollees on Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) or EBT.
- Medical Assistance enrollees receiving Long Term Care services, whose income can be verified electronically or are generally unchanging.
- Medical Assistance enrollees receiving Long Term Care services, who only uses remedial care expenses and bills for waiver services to meet a spenddown.
- Medical Assistance enrollees under the TEFRA option.
- Medical Assistance enrollees with zero income.
